You know that many employees do not live in the state where they work, in such cases, what state taxes should be withheld from an employee's paycheck and to which state does he need to pay taxes? Please remember that every state has different regulations regarding income and obligations of employees and employers with regard to the withholding of taxes and filing of their state tax returns.
It's also possible that an individual lives in one state and works in the other, and in such case, he has to file tax return in both states. However, the person is not supposed to pay taxes twice, many states have a provision which facilitate the taxpayer taking a credit on the tax return for the state where he lives for income taxes paid to another state. In other words, he needs to prepare his tax return for the state where he works. After that he has to complete a form or schedule on the return for the state where he currently lives with a view to take credit and cut-down tax which he pays to his state.
